Blogging for Fun and Profit

WordPress logoOne way to support yourself overseas is through a blog. Not sure what a blog is? Here’s some basic information to get you started.

What is a Blog?

The word “blog” is short for “web log.” An entire website can be a blog, or the blog can be just part of the site. They can be very simple, or very complex. Generally a blog presents information in chronological order, with the most recent entry first.

Most blogs allow some kind of interactivity. Typically, readers can leave comments. Some blogs include forums where readers can communicate directly with one another

You are reading a blog now, and you can leave a comment if you want!

Some examples of well known complex blogs include:

  • Huffington Post
  • Tech Crunch
  • Gizmodo
  • Mashable
  • The Wall Street Journal Washington Wire

These are all very high profile, complex blogs. On the other end of the spectrum are very simple blogs like:

  • Zen Habits
  • Matt

Most blogs fall in between somewhere.

Anything Goes

The subject of a blog can be anything from a personal journal to a newspaper or magazine. Popular blog topics include travel, health and fitness, cooking, technology, photography, writing, making money, saving money, raising a family, fashion, beauty, lifestyle, politics, news, celebrity gossip, and the list goes on and on.

You can pretty much blog about any subject.

Blogs have been made into books and movies, like Julie and Julia.

Show Me the Money

There are basically three ways to make money from a blog:

  1. Sell your own product
  2. Sell your own service
  3. Sell someone else’s product or service

We’ll be talking more about each of these in the coming weeks and months.

In the meantime, in case you missed the announcement, my first e-book is now available, free. It’s called Untether Yourself: 5 Portable Careers to Support You Overseas. It tells you about five portable careers (including blogging!) you can start now and take with you overseas. Click here to grab your copy!

I’ll be interested to read your next posts. The most important first requirement necessary towards being able to make money with a blog is to have lots and lots of readers. The number I read was 20,000 as a minimum. Getting there may well be the most difficult part.

But hey, if you don’t try, you won’t get there for sure!

Where did you see that 20,000 figure? I’ve not seen a hard and fast number like that.

I think whether you make money depends in large part on what you’re doing with your blog. If you’re hoping to make significant money just running ads, yes, you’ll need a ton of readers. However, if you’re offering a service or selling your own product, you can do it with far fewer readers.
