Who? Why? How?

We’re here to look at who decides to live overseas, why they do, and how they accomplish it. There are probably as many reasons to live outside of your native country as there are people who do so. In my case, my husband and I realized several years ago that, if we stay here, we will never be able to afford to retire. Add to this my lifelong desire to spend significant time in another country, and we began looking at the possibilities of retiring overseas. But that’s not the only reason, not by a long shot! More

Social Escapists

When I created this category, I was actually thinking about a character in a book, who was described as

“actually, one of those alcoholic hangers-on who can never go home again because of some tawdry scandal or another.” Dorothy Gilman, Elusive Mrs. Pollifax.

British literature is full of this type of expat. In today’s world, I’m not really sure that there’s anything so scandalous that its perpetrator can’t go home again, but I’m sure there are individuals who feel that way.




Perhaps another type of social escapist might be someone whose personal life became so painful, due to death, separation, abuse or other trauma, that they move overseas to avoid having to deal with it any longer.

Let’s hope these expats are few and far between!
